The Home Department is responsible for taking policy decisions related to the enforcement of Law & Order and police activities, preparation of the budget and allocation of funds after approval from the Legislature, referring cases to CID, if required. They also play a major role in decision making of prosecution against the guilty, providing extension of limit for Arms Licenses, monitoring the cases received from the National Human Rights Commission, executing the work related to the State Human Rights Commission, answering the questions in the Vidhan Sabha/Legislative Council, coordinating with the Government of India for police related matters.
Also, it is responsible for the security arrangements of citizens, VIPs, dignitaries, State Guests and important Establishments.
Four Secretaries, ten Special Secretaries and twelve Deputy/Under-Secretaries are working to assist the Principal Secretary in accomplishing the above tasks. Apart from Director General of Police, Director General (Prosecution), Director General (CB-CID), Director General (Fire Services), Director General (Technical Services), Director General (Training Services) and Director General (Special Investigation) are appointed as Heads at the respective Department level. Anti-corruption bureau is functioning under an Additional Director General of Police level officer to whom corruption related complaints are referred for investigation.
Departmental construction unit, Uttar Pradesh Police Housing Corporation, which is an autonomous institution, has been established to meet the housing and building requirements of the police department.
